The 4 Step Process to Find Clothes That Fit

Step 1 - Measure Your Body

Firstly, you need to measure your body. Take a flexible measuring tape, like the one in the image on the right. You can buy them for a couple of dollars at supermarkets or department stores and they usually come with sewing kits. Some measuring tapes have numbers on both sides so check that you are measuring from zero to your body measurement and that the tape isn’t twisted. You should be able to fit one finger under the tape, when it is wrapped around you.

01

Bust

Wear a bra if you normally wear one and keep your arms down by your sides in a relaxed position while measuring so that everything sits as it usually does. Measure around the widest part of your chest, and check in the mirror that the tape is level around your body. Breathing normally, find the number on the measuring tape that shows the distance around your body. Write down this measurement.

02

Waist

Depending on your body shape, this is the narrowest part of your torso, or halfway between your bottom rib and the top of your hip bone, usually around your belly button. Again, check that the tape is fairly level all the way round, and that you can fit one finger under the tape. Write down this measurement.

03

Hips

This should be roughly the widest point of your torso (depending on your body shape). The tape should run around your hips and bottom, below your hip bones. Make sure the measuring tape is level and doesn’t have any twists in it. To make sure the tape isn’t too tight, you should be able to fit one finger underneath the measuring tape. Write down this measurement.

04

Inseam (Optional)

Your inseam is an optional measurement. It can be used when you want a full length pair of pants. This measurement may be easier done while wearing fitted pants. Measure from the highest point of the inner leg seam to the floor (while barefoot), then take off 1cm. Make sure you’re standing naturally and not locking your knees. Write down this measurement.

Step 2 - Search the Website

Open the Know My Fit website and select “Shop Now” from the top banner. Scroll down to “Your Physical Measurements”.

01

Min Box

Using the measurements taken in Step 1, insert them into the left hand boxes (the minimum or ‘Min’ box) for Chest, Waist and Hips (and Inseam if you’re looking for full length pants).

02

Max Box

Add 5cm to each of your measurements and put that figure in the right hand box (the maximum or ‘Max’ box), this allows a little variation in your measurements for the search. Once you have input these numbers, click the red “Apply” button to search all the products on Know My Fit to find those that match your measurements.

Step 3 - Filter Your Requirements

You can scroll through all of the products that fit you, or narrow the search by using the filters located on the left-hand side of the “Shop Now” page. You can filter by category, requirements, price, or search for a specific garment or keyword.

If you see something you like, you can click on it and you will be taken to the product page. See the example on the left.

On this page you will find:

  • A description of the designer
  • Product images
  • The product sizing chart
  • A product description
  • Customer reviews
  • Designer shipping and refund policies
  • A clickable ‘Ask a Question’ box where you can ask the designer a specific question about the product if you need more information.
If you want to learn more about the designer or see their other products, you can click on their ‘Store’, located underneath the Measurements Table.

Step 4 - Choosing the Right Size

On the product page, as shown in Step 3, locate the size chart. Here you can confirm which size you should select in this item, by using the measurements you wrote down in Step 1, and comparing them to those listed in the sizing chart.

The size that you want to buy is dependent on your personal preferences. In a stretch fabric you may prefer a closer fit, while you may prefer a looser fit in less flexible fabrics or on different parts of your body. We want you to be comfortable and confident in your clothing so select the particular size that gives the fit you want on your body. Remember, women’s clothing is not standardised so what is important is the measurements – choose the garment that fits, rather than worrying about what size you’re ordering.
